Just in case any Waterfront Studio users are not aware of the ICC (International Conference Centre) or how to get there. Now you can have a virtual tour and be taken there by virtual taxi driven by our very own Boris Mayor incumbent (click on the post heading to take the tour). Whilst on the subject of tax-is did you know that in June 2009, it was revealed that Mayoral expenditure on taxi fares had risen by 540% under Boris Johnson's administration, from £729 in 2007/08 to £4,698 in 2008/09? Perhaps you better not take us there Boris!

Landscape gardening

Lovely to see the bits of garden around Waterfront Studios getting some attention after a long period of neglect. If only the same sort of attention was being spent on the failing kitchen and toilet facilities! Not only are advance warnings ignored but even when the facilities have failed it seems that it is a very slow process indeed to get them fixed! Also while in gripe mode I wonder when the penny is going to drop regarding the obviously bad thought out car park policy - management, the car park is still empty after all this time. Surely by now even you can deduce that you have your pricing policy all wrong - sort it out!

The grass is not always greener

I notice that the rather selfish attitude of Nakhon Thai staff and also their patrons means that the plot of green grass adjacent to the restaurant has now been turned into a mudbath due to continuous use by vehicles. I really do not understand why they have to get so close to the restaurant when the street is only 50 odd metres away - do you? I have put a poll below so that you can cast a vote on this matter;

Olympics 2012 joins the blogging fraternity

There are 2065 days to go to the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Games.

So, the powers that be have created a 'Work in Progress' blog to tell us what they are doing day by day and no doubt how they are spending our money. I wonder if there will be a javascript Walnut Whipometer?

I for one will be looking forward to seeing how they learn about pedestrian traffic control. Anyone who uses Stratford station/terminus regularly will know exactly what I am on about. The Victorians did a grand job channeling us to and from the platforms without colliding into each other so what happened at Stratford?

The olympic committee should send all their eager architects to Stratford terminus and make them use it everyday at all times for at least a week so they how know 'How NOT to design it!'

Secret Firework Display in Victoria Dock

On Saturday there was a large industrial barge type vessel moored on the edge of Victoria Dock and its deck was being prepared full of public display grade fireworks from a large van which had parked alongside. This firework display was let off in the middle of the dock at approx 7pm the same evening. It was quite a display considering that at most I could only see about a dozen people around the dock who witnessed them (brought out mainly by the noise they were making). I can only presume that this might have been a private display for a resident who lives dockside maybe? Anyone know more? Whoever was responsible... thanks, they were great!

Octobers award for recycling - NOT!

I got a knock on my unit door today. It was an unsolicited call by a stationary sales representative. He was carrying a box half full of thick Lyreco stationary catalogues and he asked me if I wanted one? Looking like it took a whole tree to produce and because I knew I wouldnt use it I declined. He then left my unit and headed off down the corridor and into the kitchen. Fumbled about a bit for a few minutes then carried on down the corridor towards reception. I was curious as to what he was doing in the kitchen so when I went in later I had a look around. It was interesting to find that he had added three very thick brand new Lyreco catalogues and his cardboard box to the contents of the waste bin. God help the planet, they don't make reps like they used to...

Traffic lights are RED... always!

Have you noticed? If you drive along Dock Road and pull up in the right hand lane of the T-junction, the traffic lights adjacent to West Silvertown DLR station do not change. They just sit there on red forever! I think the sensor must be faulty. However, if you drive in the left hand lane they will change to green. I have reported this to the LB of Newham today. Wonder how long it will take them to correct it? The LB of Newham does have an online reporting page on their website, just click on the online link on this page.

Tidal Basin Fire 8th August

Vacant industrial premises on Tidal Basin Road had a fire yesterday (8th August). Waterfront tenants were temporarily engulfed in a smoke cloud until the fire service managed to bring the fire under control. This might be a poignant moment to remind everyone that they should have received a fire risk assessment checklist relating to changes in the law which comes into force on 1st October 2006. Each of us will have to carry out a fire risk assessment on our units to comply. More information from the government website see link below.

At the speed of light (well almost) a new restaurant and bar has opened just a short walk from the Waterfront Studios business centre. It is called Caribbean Scene and they have snapped up a prime location on the dock front with indoor seating, bar area and outdoor space for al fresco customers. A quick look though the menu finds some familiar mouth watering caribbean dishes but rather unfamiliar ExCel type prices. Would be nice to get some feedback posted here if/when anyone tries them out!

Google Checkout - hot on the heels of Paypal

Google have launched a new online payment system called "Checkout". They are offering very competitive rates initially as an incentive to sway people away from using Paypal. Kitchen utensils to be removed?

I see the centre management have put a notice in the G level kitchen to say that the microwave, kettle, toaster and other items left in the kitchen are to be removed? However, there is no mention of why. Perhaps they would care to make the issue known? I can understand that we do not necessarily need a kettle as boiling water is provided or even a toaster, but the microwave seems to be getting used quite frequently and seems to be a very useful resource. Maybe we can come to a compromise over this? As for people who leave a large quantity of crockery soaking in the sink or on the draining board for weeks on end (yes you Sparky) well what can you say?

Pay to network in our own business centre?

I couldn't attend the networking session on Friday (19th) whose idea was it to have it at that time anyway? (10.30-11.30am). I have to also question the need to pay to network in our own business centre. Did anyone attend? Care to post a review?

I would have thought with the abundance of bars, pubs (even boats such as the Henry Johnson parked ouside in the dock) that we have networking venues a plenty which would cost nothing at all to congregate and network in. All we need to do is pick a time (comment below if you wish to suggest suitable ones, but just after normal working hours is probably best) and pencil it in for a regular day like last Weds of each month or some such occurence... bob's your uncle - see you there! Hardly a difficult task eh? Who wants to volunteer be be chief networking guru?

Island with no name suffers delays

The summer island project which was planned to be opened on the 20th of May in Victoria Dock has had to be postponed due to delivery difficulties. The island is part of a scheme to encourage people to keep active and take up watersports such as sailing, canoeing, rowing, powerboating and raft building and is to be located in front of the Watersports Centre, in Tidal Basin Road. Lets hope this is not a sign of things to come with the Olympic venues and facilities.

BT 21st Century Fibre Trial de-commissioning

The BT 21st Century fibre trial is now being de-commissioned from business units within Waterfront Studios. Those who were taking part in the trial and who are ELSBC tenants may now have to reconfigure their routers before they will connect properly to ELSBC's broadband service. SAS Telecom should be providing this support to us, but if you cant get hold of them and you get stuck give me a shout and I will tell you what I did to make it work properly.

Office furniture - Lean and green and just up the road!

First Fruit Warehouse was set up in November 2002 as part of the work of the East London based charity First Fruit. The focus is to develop training opportunities, employment experience, life-skills support and back-to-work initiatives for people with a history of unemployment and / or homelessness.

First fruit warehouse was set up in partnership with Green-Works (see ‘partners’, to store, recycle and re-sell office furniture. The furniture comes from a range of Corporate Donors who no longer need their office furniture. The vision for Greenworks was to divert as much office furniture as possible from landfill sites.

The warehouse is 32,000 square feet. They employ around ten staff to recycle and re-sell our furniture. They process around 400 tons of furniture each month.

What are your views on this? There seems to be some cloaked reasoning that these charges will be levied due to increased security because people have been complaining about vehicles being vandalised. Why does it take the management so long to react to vehicles which appear to be nothing to do with resident businesses being left for prolonged periods or being dumped in the car park, have they not realised that these have attracted the thieves/vandals in the first place? Also the boundary fences have "gaps" where 'vandals' can easily access the car park even when locked. What about the array of cameras? Have these vandals not been recorded?

Don't you just wish you thought of it first? The ingenious money making idea thought up by Alex Tew a 21 year old student consists of a webpage containing one million pixels of advertising space. He has sold the lot at a price of $1 per pixel. He calls his money spinning creation "The Million Dollar Homepage" and you can view it by clicking here. NB. The website has been so busy that now you can hardly get through to see what it looks like, I reckon their server has gone into meltdown. I notice that fuel prices are creeping up again. It is unlikely to get better noting todays news "Britain recorded its worst-ever monthly goods trade deficit during November as the oil account slipped into the red for the fifth month running." An article in Martins Money Tips points out a new website where you can sign up for free and easily locate the lowest cost petrol stations in your area. The Big Sunday - coming to a place near us soon

The London Borough of Newham are holding its biggest ever free community event on Sunday 5th February 2006 and they want you, your family and friends to come along.

The Big Sunday will take place at the ExCeL exhibition centre in Newham's Royal Docks. The event is being organised by Newham Civic Partnership.

It's going to be a fantastic day, with something for everyone. There will be celebrity acts, interactive exhibitions, displays and lots of fun and games. Admission will be completely free and we'll be running a complimentary shuttle bus service to get you there.

The purpose of the day is for you to tell us what the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will do for you and what you can give in return. DLR London City Airport extension now open

Today, Tuesday 6 December 2005, Ken Livingstone, the Mayor of London officially opened the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) London City Airport Extension. The new extension passes right by Waterfront Studios and the new station 'West Silvertown' is our nearest stop. In February 2004, the Secretary of State confirmed powers for the further extension of the London City Airport line under the Thames to Woolwich Arsenal. The new link, mostly in tunnel will link King George V station and a new DLR station in Woolwich town centre. The Woolwich Arsenal Extension should be open by early 2009.

Eyeing the Olympics - Women in Business

Women business owners in east London are being invited to find out how they can take advantage of new developments in the region.

Don't catch a cold - or a virus...!

I have noticed an increase in email virus activity over the last few days. The messages coming in have been censored by my internet provider and usually look as follows;

This mail contained a virus or a file violating the mail policy.
The file has been repaired or deleted. .pif: W32.Netsky.P@mm
Hint: most infected mails are not originating from the given sender address.
Notifying the sender does not make sense in these cases.

The emails being received all seem to have originated from businesses within Waterfront Studios. This does not mean that the infected computer IS one of the senders just that the infected computer may well have received one of the emails which has been sent to all of us from either ELSBC or GLE. Some virii can disable your computer security or anti virus software, especially if you have not been updating your virus definitions or also the security patches provided by the operating system manufacturer (that probably means Microsoft to the majority of us). To double check to see if this has happened try using an online scan security service such as "Trend HouseCall" to find out more click here. For Microsoft windows update click here.

Speed humps cause premature tyre failure - official

I have just had my car MOT test done. Only doing approx 6k miles per year because I choose to cycle to work most days. The examiner asked "do you go over a lot of speed humps?" I said I try to avoid them like the plague but my local authorities are making it impossible to avoid completely. He then pointed out very nasty wear on the inside edges (chamfers) of all four tyres. He said that he is seeing a massive increase in this problem and in his opinion it is all due to drivers straddling the speed humps which are described as "cushions" by some local councils. These are the square type humps with angled edges. He pointed out that one of my tyres is worn to a dangerous degree will have to be replaced due to this abnormal wear pattern even though the flat part i.e. circumference of the tyre is 2-3mm above the normal wear indicator. Worst case is that due to location of the wear (inner edges which are not in normal view) you might not realise you are wearing thin until a catastrophic failure or blow out occurs.

To try and reduce abnormal wear on your tyres don't straddle these type of humps - try to drive one wheel in between and one over the top part of the hump. Apart from that write to your local councillor / MP / and the Lft Hon Dictator Livingstone for a change of speed hump policy now!!!
